Employee Spotlight: Jerry Ross
Jerry’s Path to Huntington Steel
Jerry Ross came to Huntington Steel in 2021 after spending several years in the pipeline industry. The industry where he had been working had begun to experience a downturn and Jerry knew it was time for a change. Seeking stability and inspired by Huntington Steel’s century-long legacy, Jerry decided that he wanted to join the company. “I wanted to be a part of something with that kind of staying power,” Jerry recalls, highlighting the appeal of a company with deep roots and a strong history. The transition marked a significant change, but one that Jerry welcomed with open arms, ready to take on new challenges.
Exploring His Professional Passions
Jerry’s role as a welder at Huntington Steel has allowed him to explore his professional passion for creating in-depth and diverse projects. He appreciates the unique and intricate work the company undertakes. “This type of work allows me to create a variety of projects and stay out of the loop of doing the same thing over and over,” Jerry explains. The ever-changing nature of his work keeps him engaged and excited, making each day different from the last. Whether working on small-scale projects or contributing to larger constructions, Jerry finds fulfillment in his work through the craftsmanship and creativity his job demands.
Experiencing a True Family Culture
Having worked for larger companies before, Jerry finds the family-owned culture at Huntington Steel to be a refreshing change. “Huntington Steel is more focused on the people from day one,” he notes. “The genuine care and connection from colleagues, from the CEO to the newest employee, continue to make me feel valued and respected as part of the Huntington Steel family” Jerry continues. This supportive environment fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie. According to Jerry, the close-knit community at Huntington Steel stands in direct contrast to the impersonal atmosphere found in some of his previous roles, making it a place where employees are more than just a number.
Living the Creed: “God. Family. Work.”
The adoption of the creed “God. Family. Work.” by Huntington Steel in early 2023 resonates deeply with Jerry. He appreciates working for a company that prioritizes spiritual growth and family. “I feel God has truly blessed me in my life, and I think he should always be first,” Jerry shares. The creed aligns with his personal values, providing a comforting reminder that the company cares about its employees’ well-being beyond just their professional contributions. Being in alignment with his values has given Jerry a sense of purpose and belonging, reinforcing his commitment to his work and his coworkers.
Pride in Quality and Teamwork
One of Jerry’s most memorable projects was contributing to the Brad D. Smith building at Marshall University. Although he says he played a minor role, the experience of working as part of a team to achieve a high standard of quality and efficiency left a lasting impression on him. “I take great pride in being able to meet the level of detail and quality that our customers expect,” Jerry states, reflecting on the satisfaction he gets from his work. The teamwork and collaboration involved in such projects underscore the importance of collective effort in doing it right the first time.
A Life Beyond Welding
Outside of work, Jerry enjoys spending time with his family, riding his Harley, and attending church. His hobbies allow him time to reflect on his appreciation for life and the importance of balancing his professional and personal lives. Whether he’s exploring the open road on his Harley or creating memories with his grandchildren, Jerry embraces every day in life with enthusiasm and gratitude. These personal activities provide a necessary counterbalance to his professional life, allowing him to recharge and maintain time for the most important things in his life.
A Message for the Future
If given the chance to leave a message for future generations, Jerry’s words would be simple yet profound: “Life is too short, so be sure to do the right thing. Life won’t always be easy, but remember to put God first.” His message reflects the core values he lives by and the knowledge he has gained through his experiences. It’s a reminder of the importance of integrity, faith, and perseverance in both personal and professional life.
